Good Food Bank

034a6251

In response to input from the people who use our Good Food Bank, we have adjusted our hours as indicated below. People told us that morning-only options didn’t work for them and that they’d rather get more food once a week than smaller amounts twice a week. Note that, with our new program, people may come either Monday mornings or Wednesday afternoons — but not both, just once a week. If these options don’t work for you, please contact us at 250 354 1633 or speak with a staff member in person to talk about options.

Mondays 9:00 am – 1:00 pm
Wednesdays 1:00 – 5:00 pm
(or by appointment)

We are closed on statutory holidays, but after a holiday Monday will open on Tuesday from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm.

At the Nelson Food Cupboard, we believe that access to healthy food is a human right.

Due to various social and economic factors, many people in our community do not have sufficient resources to provide food for themselves and their families. We are here to bridge that gap.

The Nelson Food Cupboard Good Food Bank is barrier-free which allows people to use the service as often as is needed without  justifying their need. There are no registration or ID requirements.

If you need to use our service, help us out by bringing your own grocery bags.

People come to us from all walks of life: seniors, families with young children, people with disabilities, and under-employed people making less than a living wage. In 2016, we had over 16,000 customer visits.

We provide 5 choices of fresh produce, plus a variety of protein sources and whole grains, and, during the holiday time, we distribute special, seasonal foods. If you are interested, check out our healthy food policies .

Food Recovery

Twice a week volunteers pick up surplus food, that would otherwise go to the landfill, from some of our local commercial kitchens like at the Hume Hotel and The Prestige. Volunteers repackage it, and then it’s frozen to give out to visitors to our good food bank. There are many benefits to this program, including:

  • access to healthy soups, stews, breakfast foods and treats for people who lack food preparation skills or the space and tools to make such foods.
  • the redirection of food destined for the landfill
  • community involvement that helps build awareness around issues relating to poverty
